The fiber art exhibition “Texture of Time, Memory of Place”, a joint initiative of Konak Municipality and the Textile and Fashion Design Department of Dokuz Eylül University’s (DEÜ) Faculty of Fine Arts, has opened its doors to art lovers. The Historic Kıllıoğlu Hamam, built on a classical Ottoman architectural plan and put to different uses over the years, has been given new life through contemporary art following its restoration.
Where Historic Architecture Meets Contemporary Art
Held as part of the 103rd anniversary celebrations of the Republic, the exhibition presents 21 original works by 16 academic-artists from the department, displayed in the interior and exterior spaces of the historic venue. Blending material, texture, form and color through different techniques, the works enter into a dialogue with the building’s architectural fabric and offer visitors a unique aesthetic experience.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Konak Mayor Nilüfer Çınarlı Mutlu stressed the importance of restoring historic venues and bringing them back into cultural and artistic life. Mutlu said, “As a mayor following in the footsteps of a great leader who valued art deeply, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, we are trying to sustain a municipal approach that produces art and brings it together with society.”
On View Until 12 November
Neslihan Yaşar, Head of the Textile and Fashion Design Department at DEÜ’s Faculty of Fine Arts, and exhibition curator Lecturer Mustafa Kula also noted that the historic venue adds depth to the works. Aiming to contribute to the rich cultural memory of Basmane, the exhibition can be visited at the Historic Kıllıoğlu Hamam between 09:00 and 18:00, except Sundays and Mondays, until 12 November.
