Representing Türkiye in Venice is one of the most visible moments at which an artist comes to the attention of international institutions and collectors. This year, Nilbar Güreş is on that stage. At The Vault Mag we begin our “Collector’s Notes” series with her.
The Türkiye Pavilion in Venice: why does “Gözlerinizden Öperim” matter?
Nilbar Güreş appears at the Türkiye Pavilion of the 61st Venice Biennale with the exhibition “Gözlerinizden Öperim”. Biennale pavilions are among the rare platforms where an artist’s work is put before museums, curators and major collections, so such a representation is in itself seen as a sign of institutional trust.
Through a collector’s eyes: the thread of memory, body and handwork
Güreş is known to work with materials such as fabric, collage and video. This fits the “memory, land and handwork” thread we described in our outlook file. Our view: among local artists, she is the name most likely to enter the international collecting radar.
What to watch in the coming period
The way to tell whether an artist adds value to a collection is to look not at a single exhibition but at the continuity of the exhibition record. For Güreş, the points to follow are institutional exhibition invitations after Venice, her gallery’s new fair participations and the way new works are shown. This article is not investment advice.
