The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A), one of the world’s leading museums of art, design and decorative arts, is hosting a major exhibition centred on Istanbul’s unique historical fabric. Covering the period from AD 330, when Constantinople was founded as the new capital of the Roman Empire, to 1922, when the Ottoman Empire came to an end, the exhibition brings the city’s identity as home to two great empires onto the international art stage.
“Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires”
Titled “Constantinople to Istanbul: One City, Two Empires”, it is the first major exhibition in the United Kingdom to treat Istanbul’s Byzantine and Ottoman history as a whole. Rather than a sharp break, the V&A curatorial team presents 1453 as part of a long continuity in which political power, religion, trade, art and daily life transformed one another over centuries.
More than 200 works from around the world
Bringing together more than 200 rare works from around the world and from the museum’s own collection, the exhibition reveals Istanbul’s rich web of cultural exchange stretching from the Mediterranean to Europe and across the Christian and Islamic worlds. Exhibitions of this calibre continue to place Türkiye’s historical and aesthetic heritage on global culture platforms and bring the city’s artistic vision to international audiences.
