In its third year as Official Partner of the Art Basel Paris Public Program, Miu Miu has invited French filmmaker Alice Diop to take the stage. Conceived at the invitation of Miuccia Prada, Geste de Consolation (Gesture of Consolation) will open to the public from 21 to 25 October 2026 at the Palais d’Iéna — home of France’s Economic, Social and Environmental Council and venue of Miu Miu’s shows — following a preview on 20 October.
The project continues a dialogue that began with Fragments for Venus, the film Diop made for Miu Miu Women’s Tales in 2025. Diop’s first foray into exhibition-making, Geste de Consolation brings film, photography, sculpture, poetry, dance, music and performance into a single narrative, carrying her research into the representation of Black women beyond the screen.
Diop describes the starting point: “At the heart of my curation, I wanted acts of consolation by Black women artists, each working in her own discipline, to repair the fetishising gaze in which art history has confined us for centuries.”
Visitors move through four connected spaces. The journey opens with a photograph by South African artist Zanele Muholi, followed by Diop’s two-screen video installation of archive footage and film excerpts that shaped her gaze. The next stop, “Chambre à soi” (A Room of One’s Own), takes its cue from a motif by artist Mary Lee Bendolph.
