Turkish-Canadian artist Pelin Yazar’s new solo exhibition, “Aidiyet / Belonging”, will be on view at Museo Moda in Kadıköy from 14 to 26 November. After long years in Chicago and Montreal and a return to Istanbul in 2015, Yazar now looks at the city of her childhood: the Bosphorus, the Marmara, Burgazada and the Bostancı shore. In the show, these familiar waters and coastlines become a map of memory woven from colour.
The question at the heart of the exhibition is simple but lasting: where, and with whom, does a person feel they belong? “Saklı Balık” (The Hidden Fish) touches on it through a small fish that, migrating from the Black Sea to the Marmara, is separated from its shoal. The figures in Yazar’s paintings do not give themselves away easily; at times they hide inside the picture, inviting viewers to look closer. For the artist, belonging is less about a place than about forming a bond — with a person, a time, a language, a feeling.
Yazar has never severed her ties with Canada and continues to represent the country at artist meetings and symposia abroad. The general opening takes place on Saturday 14 November, 11:00–23:00, with a press-only visit from 11:00 to 17:00. The programme of artist talks and private meetings will be announced on @pelinyazarart.
