Sotheby’s is bringing one of the finest collections remaining in private hands to New York. Headlining its November 18 evening sale, the Blaquier-Arrieta Collection charts the birth of modern art through a selection carrying a combined estimate of $450 million. Its flagship lot is a late Van Gogh landscape from his Auvers-sur-Oise period, estimated at roughly $180 million — among the rarest survivors of the artist’s final months.

The sale also features Paul Cézanne’s iconic ‘Arlequin,’ Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s 1877 boating scene ‘En Canot,’ and works by Monet, Degas, Gauguin, Derain and Vlaminck. The collection’s provenance is as storied as the paintings themselves, having passed through the hands of legendary collectors including Albert Lasker, Norton Simon and Lord Rothschild.

Ahead of the sale, the collection is touring the world: the exhibition opens in London (September 30–October 1), then travels to Taipei, Hong Kong and Paris before a final New York preview from November 7–17. Expected to be one of the most closely watched sales of the year among museum curators and collectors alike, it’s a moment worth following for anyone keeping a pulse on the art market.
