The world of art and jewellery has been rocked by the news of a heist that took place in one of Vienna’s most prestigious museums. A rare necklace, considered the masterpiece of the French jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels, with a market value of $4.3 million, was stolen in a professional operation. This piece, which was targeted by thieves who skillfully surpassed security systems, was covered with sapphires and diamonds adorned with the brand’s signature ‘mystery set’ technique. The jewellery is said to be almost impossible to sell on the market, as such iconic pieces are considered part of art history, as international police agencies have been put on alert in the wake of the incident. This sad event rekindled the debate over the safety of valuable collections, once again reminding how fragile the luxury world’s most prized assets can be. While the missing necklace is being traced, collectors and art lovers hope it will one day return to where it belongs.
