As Istanbul-born denim brand Mavi celebrates its 35th year, it returns to a name its path has crossed many times: Magnum photographer Martin Parr. Sponsored by Mavi and organised with Magnum, the Martin Parr Foundation and 212 Photography Istanbul, “Short & Sweet: A Retrospective Look” brings together 160 works from the artist’s career of more than five decades at the Galata Greek School.
The most comprehensive Martin Parr retrospective ever held in Türkiye, the exhibition invites visitors to read, as a whole, the colourful, humorous and sharply observant eye the photographer, who passed away last year, turned on everyday life.
The selection carries special meaning for Istanbul. Over the years Parr worked with Mavi on various projects and fashion shoots; in Parrjektif, one of the most memorable outcomes of that partnership, he interpreted the city’s daily life and style through his own lens. Twenty years on, his Istanbul photographs now feature in the retrospective.
Founded in Istanbul in 1991, Mavi is marking its 35th year with special projects that revisit the stories and collaborations the brand has built over time; the Parr retrospective is one of the first steps of that journey.
