Built on Long Island in 1919 by Delano & Aldrich for financier Otto Hermann Kahn, and the second-largest private residence in the United States after the Biltmore Estate, Oheka Castle will be sold to the highest bidder on October 27. The sale is being run by Concierge Auctions, which specialises in luxury real estate auctions.
Set on 23 acres, the 112,895-square-foot mansion with 127 rooms and 34 guest suites was bought by current owner Gary Melius in 1984 for $1.5 million and revived through a roughly $40 million restoration, described as the largest private residential restoration in American history. The property’s owner, Kahn Property Owner LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2025 against the risk of foreclosure; the company carries roughly $60 million in debt.
Prospective bidders are required to put down a $750,000 deposit, with a 6 percent buyer’s premium. A 5.13-acre portion of the estate also has pre-approval for a development of 95 luxury condominiums. Oheka Castle has appeared in numerous productions, from Citizen Kane to Succession to Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” video.
