Artweeks Istanbul, a fixture of Turkey’s art calendar, has turned the spotlight on the country’s most important collections with its Collector’s Edition. Realised with Bilgili Sanat and Kalebodur as main sponsors, the special selection is open to visitors in the historic buildings of Akaretler Sıraevler as a public-space experience.
The programme draws on the long-established collections of Banu & Hakan Çarmıklı, Öner Kocabeyoğlu and Tansa Mermerci, each shaped by a different curatorial approach. Works chosen from the Banu & Hakan Çarmıklı Collection centre on personal encounters and reunions, with a notable weight given to women artists and feminist approaches. Passion and Patience (Tutku ve Sabır), curated by Levent Çalıkoğlu from Öner Kocabeyoğlu’s collection, brings together leading names of both the School of Paris and international contemporary art, including Fikret Mualla, Abidin Dino, Tony Cragg and Antony Gormley.
The third strand, Stillness and Turmoil (Sükûn ve Galeyan) from the Tansa Mermerci Collection, sets traditional art against contemporary production along an axis of contrast and calm. Positioning Turkey as a serious meeting point on the global art scene, the selection can be visited at Akaretler Sıraevler until 8 November.
